I don’t know about other folks (I suspect you are the same), but I continue to watch from afar the recovery efforts that are going on in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.  My heart hurts for what I consider “my people” as I am a southern girl at heart and many of my family and friends were affected by the storm in some way.  So I am happy to stay connected through first-hand reports of WELS recovery efforts.  I thought I would share some of these resources with you, in case you were interested in following them as well:

Crown of Life, New Orleans – The only WELS congregation in New Orleans, pastored by David Sternhagen, is located in the now-famous 9th Ward and both the church and parsonage as well as the majority of the members homes were destroyed by the flood waters.  WELS Builders for Christ and Faith in Action teams are helping this congregation rebuild!  Pastor Sternhagen writes daily e-mail words of encouragement and news updates and you can read them online or subscribe for e-mail delivery.  He even includes photos.  The service is named Diaspora (I don’t know the significance).  Here’s an excerpt from February 1, 2006:

Dear Scattered Members of the Family:

“What is man that you make so much of him, that you give him so much attention….will you never look away from me, or let me alone even for an instant?”  Job 7:7,9

It is always the same.  Someone sticks a microphone in the face of  some pathetic Katrina evacuee, like me, and asks, “You’ve lost everything, how  does it make you feel?”  Are they really expecting some other answer than,  “It makes me feel awful, how are you?”  But we are Christians  right?    This stuff is supposed to roll off us like water off a  duck.  But it doesn’t.  Why not?  Well it is because we are not  stupid.  And amazingly, it is because we believe. (more…)

You can keep up with the progress in this New Orleans congregation by following these links:

Imprint blog – Much of the disaster relief efforts have been reported on WELS Imprint blog in the disaster relief category.  Here you can read and even listen in some cases to first-hand accounts of the recovery.

WELS Daily Prayer for February 10, 2006 – A wonderful prayer expressing thankfulness for those who are helping in so many ways.

Please continue to pray for those affected by this storm.
