  • Sweet Home Mississippi

I’ve been blessed to spend some holiday time in Mississippi with my family.  Here’s a photo of the whole crew.  It has been a great ending to a great year!

  • Where are they now?

I thought it would be fun to check in on our Christmas 2006 Travel Bugs to see who traveled the fartherest during 2007.

But first, a brief explanation. We love geocaching (finding hidden treasures using our GPS unit), so last Christmas we gifted each of our family members with a geogaching “travel bug”, which is basically a dog tag with a serial number that is logged in and out of caches as it travels. We placed each of the eight travel bugs in caches in Natchez, Mississippi and waited to see where they would travel. Here’s a summary of their travels, ranked by the miles they’ve covered:

    • Woodland Fairy – Nona & Darrell – currently in The Netherlands – 8,753.2 miles
    • Dog Lover – Janet- currently in Mexico – 3,181.2 miles
    • Christian Cross – Kevin & Sallie – currently in Nevada – 1,582.5 miles
    • Funny Monkey – Benjamin – currently in South Carolina – 729.8 miles
    • Mozart the Toad -Luke – currently in Alabama – 367 miles
    • Do-It-Yourself – Jack & Judy – currently missing in action in Arkansas – 332.4 miles
    • All Smiles – Pete & Nina – currently in Mississippi – 322.2 miles
    • Dragon Lover – Stanley -currently missing in action in Louisiana – 0 miles
  • God’s Perfect Planning

    Based on: Galatians 4:4-7

    God’s Perfect Planning (.mp3 – 4.6 MB)

Have you ever bought a gift for someone that you are particularly proud of? Have you ever experienced one of those times when you knew exactly what would be the perfect gift for that special person? You planned very carefully how you would get that gift and wrap it and get it into the house so that they would not know. Then you couldn’t wait to give it to that person. It brought you pleasure to give that gift, because you put a lot of effort into that gift. You thought about what kind of gift to give and you planned just how to give it. This morning we look at the preparations God made to give his gift and we also look at the wonderful gift he gave.

  • The Word Made Flesh

The Word Made Flesh (.mp3 – 3.1 MB)

Dear Christian, when you go home this morning, celebrate Christmas! Celebrate by giving gifts because you know the gift God has given you. Celebrate by spending time with family knowing God has made you part of his family. Celebrate by eating good food remembering the marriage feast God has promised you. But as you celebrate may you never forget why you celebrate Christmas – that when Christ was born God showed his love for us.

  • This Baby is God

    Based on: Matthew 1:18-25

This Baby is God (.mp3 – 4.5 MB)

In our gospel for today, we read about Jesus’ earthly father, Joseph. What was going through Joseph’s mind? What kind of emotional ups and downs did he experience at that time before Jesus was born? First, he was going to get married, and that in itself would cause excitement and anticipation. But then he finds out that his wife-to-be seems to have been unfaithful. She is pregnant. How can this be? Matthew tells us that Joseph was a righteous man, and I don’t think he would’ve picked a wife that wasn’t also a God-fearing person. Mary certainly didn’t seem like the type that would cheat on him, but eventually he decides that he will break their engagement promise and send her away quietly.

Have you been keeping an eye on the Christmas tree at your house? Have you been waiting and watching for that one package to appear under the tree with your name on it, that gift you’ve been looking forward to getting? Perhaps you are not looking for anything specific this year, but sometimes there is something very specific you need or want.

  • Advent by Candlelight

Posted on December 13th, 2007 Sallie No comments

This past Sunday night St. John’s ladies gatherd for a special evening of fellowship and food in an elegant setting at our Advent by Candlelight event. Eleven tables were decorated for the evening, and everyone first “toured” the tables while they enjoyed punch and harp music. Next we were seated for a devotion entitled “God Wraps His Presents“. This was followed by a fabulous meal cooked by a crew of St. John’s most talented chefs and served by the teens of St. John’s. Just listen to this menu:

Shrimp and vegetable hors d’oeuvre cups
    Fresh Strawberry Spiniach Salad
Chicken Cordon Bleu on a bed of White & Wild Rice
    Steamed Green Beans Amandine
    Cranberry Relish
    Dinner Roll with Butter
    Frozen Mocha Dream
    Assorted Beverages

After dinner we were treated to a concert of Christmas songs by Christian singer Susan Ann. What a wonderful evening we enjoyed!

Please visit our photo gallery of this fun evening.

  • Prepare for the Lord through Repentance

Posted on December 9th, 2007 Pastor Kevin Draper No comments

    Based on: Matthew 3:1-12

Prepare for the Lord through Repentance (.mp3 – 4.5 MB)

What would you think if you saw someone in strange clothes, someone who only ate grasshoppers and whatever he could find in the wild. What would you think if his message was basically, “repent for the kingdom of God is near”? Apparently many people thought that John the Baptist was worth taking time to go see. People walked for miles from all around to see John and hear him preach. By telling the people to repent he was fulfilling the prophecy of Isaiah that said he would be the voice of one calling in the desert, “Prepare the way for the Lord.” That is exactly what repentance does. It is the way you are prepared for the Lord’s coming. Remember last week we talked about Jesus and his coming and that it could happen at any moment. Today we look at John the Baptist and his message of repentance because now, just as it was at John’s time, the way to prepare for the Lord’s coming is through repentance.

  • Merry Christmas 2007

Posted on December 7th, 2007 Sallie 3 comments

As we pause to wish all the Draper’s Diary readers a blessed Christmas season, we want to share with you some of the many blessings we received this year.

    • We are blessed with a beautiful new church, school, house, home town and an expanded Christian family. Please visit our church web site –
    • We are blessed with fulfilling work in service to our risen Savior. Kevin has adjusted well and is very much enjoying his many and varied pastoral responsibilities. Sallie continues her job with the synod on a part-time basis and is also volunteer teaching computer classes a few hours a week at our elementary school.
    • We are blessed with music. Our boys (and Mom and Dad) continue piano and violin lessons. The boys are preparing to sing in the children’s Christmas Eve service, and Mom is loving singing in the adult choir.
    • We are blessed with great books and magazines to read. Some of our favorites include the Hank the Cow Dog series, A Barrel of Laughs, A Vale of Tears, the Mitford series, The Lord of the Rings, National Geographic Kids and the Redwall series.
    • We are blessed with a wonderful family with whom we enjoyed visits this summer!
    • We are blessed with a loving Savior who we celebrate this Christmas and always. Thanks be to God for the precious gift of his Son who lived and died for us. Acts 4:12

Our prayer for you this Christmas is that you too are blessed to know the love of your Savior, Jesus Christ.

    Merry Christmas 2007
